Philippine Mountaineering Community Mourns the Loss of Engr. Philipp “PJ” Santiago II on Mt. Everest

The Philippine mountaineering community is in deep mourning following the heartbreaking news of Engr. Philipp “PJ” Santiago II’s passing at Camp IV on Mt. Everest. At 45 years old, Engr. PJ was pursuing a dream that only the bravest souls dare to chase—reaching the summit of the world’s highest peak.

According to expedition organizers and Nepal’s Department of Tourism, Engr. PJ was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar – Snowy Everest Expedition 2025. He died last night at Camp IV while preparing for the final push toward the summit. The exact cause of his death remains unknown, and efforts are currently underway to bring his body back to base camp.

This marks the first recorded death of a foreign climber on Everest this season.

His passing has sent shockwaves throughout the Filipino mountaineering community. Known for his determination, humility, and relentless passion for the mountains, Engr. PJ inspired many with his pursuit of a dream larger than life. Tributes have since poured in, honoring his courage and unwavering spirit.

“He died chasing a dream that only the brave dare to follow. His spirit now rests among the stars, forever part of the mountain,” one tribute reads.

To those who knew him, he was more than a mountaineer—he was a trailblazer, a mentor, and a friend. Today, the peaks mourn with us, and the wind carries his name across the Himalayas.
